Che Che Che Che Changes
Ernesto Guevara de la Serna. You may know him as simply “Che” but the former is actually the name given to him upon his birth in Argentina. A few of his more memorable quotes appear below:
“I don’t care if I fall as long as someone else picks up my gun and keeps on shooting.”
“In fact, if Christ himself stood in my way, I, like Nietzsche, would not hesitate to squish him like a worm”
“Hatred as an element of the struggle; a relentless hatred of the enemy, impelling us over and
beyond the natural limitations that man is heir to and transforming him into an effective, violent,
selective and cold killing machine. Our soldiers must be thus; a people without hatred cannot vanquish a brutal enemy.”
I am able to get a pretty good idea of what this man was about by reading the above quotes. Apparently, many people in this country are not so similarly able. Or, more frighteningly, they are, and actually agree with his philosophy. I decided to write this article after seeing a video of a woman shouting about revolution, capitalism and imperialism. She appeared rather angry and I noticed that she was wearing a “Che” t-shirt. I wondered whether she realized who this guy really was. I concluded from her rhetoric that she was fully aware and further concluded that there was no helping someone like this.
This article is not for the people who know the history of the man and still choose to adorn themselves with his likeness and espouse his evil philosophy. This article is for those that adorn themselves with his likeness in an effort to appear hip without actually realizing who the man was and what he stood for. For the legions of “Che fans” out there wallowing in relative ignorance, here is the quick 411 on “Che.”
“Che” was born in Argentina in 1928. His family was relatively well off and his father was an engineer. Due to asthma he was mostly home schooled by his mother and eventually went to college and became a physician. “Che” traveled across South America on a scooter and was struck by the poverty he encountered which led him into a life of political activism. He blamed capitalism in general and the United States in particular for the poverty he encountered. He met Raul and Fidel Castro in Mexico City and joined the Cuban Revolution where he quickly was promoted through the ranks eventually rising to be Castro’s second in command. During the revolution, “Che” was responsible for the executions of untold numbers of enemy combatants. Mercy was not in this man’s vocabulary. After the revolution, “Che” was responsible for overseeing the appeals and executions by firing squad of those perceived to be enemies of the state and those convicted during the revolutionary trials which occurred at the end of the revolution. “Che” Guevara was the person mainly responsible for the Cuban missile crisis as it was he who played the greatest role in acquiring the Russian missiles for Cuba. He felt betrayed when the Soviets removed the missiles and went so far as to say he would have launched them if they had been under his control. After this, Guevara bounced around the globe on “diplomatic” missions attempting to stir up Marxist revolutions until his eventual capture and execution in Bolivia in 1967. He was a man of many contradictions. He was a physician sworn to uphold the Hippocratic Oath and also a cold blooded killer. He spent a great deal of his time among illiterates and yet was a prolific author. He espoused violent revolution and yet was a diplomat. “Che” was a complex and intelligent man and as a human being was undeniably capable of kindness and yet was responsible for the murders and executions of untold numbers of political enemies, dissidents and enemy combatants.
So there you have it. Marxist. America hater. Mass murderer. Professional pot stirrer. Quite the role model huh? For those heretofore ignorant of this man and what he stood for, think about this before you put on your “Che” shirt. Do your personal beliefs line up with those of “Che?” If not, get rid of the shirt. If so, go ahead and wear it. It’s a free country for now.
